Poker: The Unlikely Bond Among Los Angeles Artists
Poker has become an essential part of the artistic world in Los Angeles, with conversations about the game prevalent in galleries and art salons. Artist Sara Kim moved from New York to Los Angeles and quickly learned about the exclusive high-stakes poker game that has been going on for decades, involving famous artists, art dealers, and collectors. Sara Kim's first poker game was organized by artist Isabel Browman in the Murmurs gallery.
Bita Horrami, organizer of private games for affluent audiences, was introduced to gambling by Eddie Cruz, founder of the popular US clothing brand Undefeated. Horrami and Cruz are actively developing the company Casinola, which organizes gambling events for the glamorous crowd of Los Angeles. Jason Russos, a veteran of expensive closed games in Los Angeles and a known collector, helped promote Casinola. Casinola attracts a new audience with minimal buy-ins and a pleasant atmosphere, including women-only tournaments.
The poker boom among artists coincided with the start of the pandemic, when many began playing online. Eric Kim, a gallery owner, became the most famous organizer of semi-private 'art games' in casinos and underground clubs in Los Angeles. The World Series of Art Poker, held annually during Frieze Week, features top artists and collectors, with past participants including Phil Ivey and Eric Seidel. In 2023, Richard Prince, a living icon in the art world, made a surprise appearance at the World Series of Art Poker.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
