From Mysterious Origins to Global Phenomenon: The Evolution of Poker
Poker's origins are shrouded in mystery, with numerous theories about how and where it began. Some posit that poker originated from the Persian game of as nas, which was played in the 16th century. Others suggest it derives from French poque or German pochen - both games involving bluffing and betting.
The French brought poque to their colonies in New Orleans, while Germans brought pochen up the Mississippi River. These early versions of poker were played by Southern aristocrats, travelers on riverboats, and even Civil War soldiers.
Poker saw its first major evolutions in the early 1800s as draw poker emerged, allowing players to improve their hands by exchanging cards. Stud poker also arose, introducing face-up cards and betting rounds. But the biggest poker innovation came in 1925 with community card poker. This version, including games like Texas hold 'em, gave players shared cards to make hands.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
