Doyle Brunson Names His Pick for the Most Talented Poker Player Ever
Doyle Brunson recently commented on a Twitter post by Remko Rinkema, which listed the top 10 most talented poker players of all time. Brunson, a legendary player himself, had a different opinion on who should top the list. Phil Ivey and Stu Ungar are often considered the most talented, with Ivey respected by his peers and Ungar known for his exceptional skills despite personal struggles.
Brunson, however, thinks differently. He believes that Chip Reese, a long-time friend and rival, should be at the top of the list. Reese and Brunson were known for their all-around skills and deep understanding of the game, which set them apart from other players who primarily made their names in live tournaments or heads-up cash games.
The discussion around talent in poker is complex, as it's hard to determine how much of a player's success comes from natural ability versus hard work. Daniel Negreanu defines talent as creativity and abstract thinking, rather than just studying and memorizing strategies. Patrick Leonard points out that Bryn Kenney, for example, doesn't use modern tools or work with others but still excels in the toughest games. Mike McDonald highlights Dan Colman, who rose from a beginner to the best HU SnG player in the world in less than a year and then went on to win nearly $30 million in Super High Rollers.

Argus RivenI've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
