Derek Walters' ICM Strategy: Buying Shares in the WSOP Main Event

Derek Walters planned to buy shares in the WSOP Main Event using the ICM method. He gathered a fund of $1 million to execute this strategy. The fund was composed of 75% backers and 25% professional poker players.

Derek Walters used thehendonmob.com database to evaluate players' strengths. He began this process on the seventh day of the tournament when 57 players remained. Walters assessed each player's ROI based on available information, including their results in live tournaments and online games. He also reached out to acquaintances for additional insights.

Derek Walters successfully bought shares from three players for a total of $75,000. Notably, Brandon Eisen sold 10% of his shares to Walters for $31,500. The deal was finalized just before the resumption of play on the sixth day of the tournament.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
