The Poker Hand That Launched Daniel Negreanu's Career

Daniel Negreanu is one of the most famous poker players in the world, with hundreds of thousands of social media followers.

In 1999, Daniel Negreanu was a relatively unknown young professional and had never appeared in televised broadcasts. His first televised appearance was at the final table of the U.S. Championship in Atlantic City.

Negreanu faced John Bonetti in the heads-up round, whom he respected greatly and considered his teacher. John Bonetti started his professional poker career at the age of 59 and won over 40 tournaments, including three WSOP bracelets. Negreanu won $210,000 in the U.S. Championship, which was a significant amount at the time.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
