Connor Drinan's Million-Dollar Loss at WSOP 2014: The Unlucky Hand

Connor Drinan played in the Big One for One Drop tournament at WSOP 2014 with a buy-in of $1,000,000. During the second day of play, the dealer dealt Drinan pocket aces. Drinan was excited when he saw a large raise from Kary Katz and went all-in, aiming to win a big pot. Kary Katz also had pocket aces and called Drinan's all-in.

The flop showed 2-K-5, giving Kary Katz a 5% chance to make a flush. On the turn, another club increased Katz's chances to 20%. The river card, a 2 of clubs, sealed Drinan's fate, eliminating him from the tournament.

Despite this loss, Connor Drinan went on to win 5 victories at SCOOP 2020 and a gold bracelet at WSOP 2020, showcasing his resilience and skill in the poker world.

I've spent years at the tables — cash and tournaments — and just as long shaping poker copy behind the scenes: room reviews, bonus fine print, tournament notes. At PokerInsider I write the way I wish more sites would: clear structure, honest trade-offs, no hype. Whether you're new or already grinding, I care about what the offer actually costs you — rake, variance, and the fine print — and I treat responsible play as part of the job, not a footnote.
