Alex Teologis Reveals the Secrets of ICM in Poker Tournaments

Poker player Alex Teologis recently shared his insights on the Independent Chip Model (ICM) and its significance in poker tournaments. According to Teologis, ICM strategy starts from the first hand and significantly influences the game. He emphasized that many players make the mistake of thinking ICM only matters at the bubble, but in reality, it affects decisions much earlier.

In a scenario with four players left, where the chip leader goes all-in and you have AKo with approximately 62% equity against their pushing range, Teologis advises considering the risk premium and potential EV of doubling. He explains that the decision changes based on whether you are in a regular tournament or a satellite. In a satellite where only the first place gets all the money, there is no ICM, so you should make a happy call. However, in a regular tournament, the presence of ICM means you need to consider the risk premium and potential EV of doubling.

Teologis also highlighted the biggest ICM mistake amateurs make: either overestimating or underestimating ICM in bounty tournaments. He noted that players often fail to account for the structure of payouts and the remaining bounty money in the game. This oversight can lead to poor decisions and missed opportunities. Teologis' advice underscores the importance of understanding ICM and applying it correctly in various tournament situations.
