How rake and rakeback work
Rake is what the room takes from cash-game pots; in tournaments it is the fee added to the buy-in, such as $1 on a $10 entry. It is the main cost of playing, and it adds up with volume: at $6 per 100 hands, 20,000 hands cost $1,200 a month.
Rakeback returns a share of that rake to you. At 30% you get $360 of the $1,200 back, which is $4,320 a year, and your net rake falls to $840. Rakeback does not change how much you win at the table; it lowers the cost of playing, so it matters most for high-volume and break-even players.
To compare offers, look at the real percentage and how it is paid: some rooms pay a flat share of rake, others use tiers or points that depend on how much you play. A bigger headline number is not always worth more, so check the terms before you compare.
Worked example
You play 20,000 cash hands a month and pay $6 rake per 100 hands: that is $1,200 a month, $14,400 a year.
With 30% rakeback you receive $360 a month ($4,320 a year) and your net rake is $840 a month. If your results before rakeback are $600 a month, the total is $960, and rakeback is 37.5% of it.
Questions and answers
What is rakeback?
Rakeback is a share of the rake or tournament fees that a poker room or an affiliate returns to the player. It is usually a percentage of the rake you generate.
How do I calculate rakeback?
Multiply the rake you pay by the rakeback percentage. If you pay $1,200 in rake and get 30% back, rakeback is 1,200 × 0.30 = $360.
Is rakeback the same as a bonus?
No. A bonus is a one-time reward, often tied to deposits and wagering. Rakeback is paid regularly in proportion to the rake you generate.
Does rakeback make me a winning player?
It lowers the cost of playing but does not change your results at the table. For a player who loses slightly before rakeback, it can move the total closer to break-even.
